Most people don't think twice about the containers they use to store food. A leftover container, a roll of plastic wrap, a zip-top bag — these are such ordinary parts of a kitchen that questioning them can feel excessive. But the materials your food comes into contact with matter, and plastic food storage is one of the easier swaps to make once you understand why it's worth making.
The problem with plastic
Plastic food storage containers — including many that are labeled BPA-free — can leach chemicals into food, particularly when exposed to heat, fat, or acid. BPA (bisphenol A) became a household concern over the past two decades as research linked it to hormone disruption, and many brands responded by removing it from their products. What that marketing doesn't always make clear is that the chemicals used to replace BPA, including BPS and BPF, are structurally similar and carry many of the same concerns.
The issue isn't limited to bisphenols. Plastic is not a single material — it's a category that includes hundreds of different formulations, many of which contain plasticizers, stabilizers, and other additives that aren't fully disclosed on the label. When plastic is heated — in a microwave, in a dishwasher, or even just holding warm food — the likelihood of chemical migration into food increases.
Plastic wrap adds another layer of concern. Conventional plastic wraps are often made from PVC (polyvinyl chloride) or contain plasticizers like DEHA that can transfer to food on contact, especially with fatty foods like cheese.
The "BPA-free" problem
BPA-free labeling has become one of the cleaner examples of a reassurance that doesn't fully hold up. The removal of one chemical of concern from a complex material doesn't make that material inert. It means one specific ingredient was swapped out, often for something with a similar chemical profile that has been studied less.
This is a pattern worth recognizing across product categories. "Free from" language tells you what was removed. It doesn't tell you what replaced it, or whether that replacement is meaningfully safer.
What to use instead
The most straightforward alternatives to plastic food storage are materials that don't carry the same chemical migration concerns and have longer track records of safe use. Borosilicate glass
Glass is the most versatile option. It's non-reactive, meaning it doesn't interact chemically with food regardless of temperature, acidity, or fat content. Unlike plastic, hot food can go directly into a glass container without any concern about chemical leaching. Glass doesn't absorb stains or odors either — it stays clean and neutral wash after wash in a way that plastic simply doesn't.
The borosilicate glass set we carry is worth knowing by material name. Borosilicate is specifically engineered to handle rapid temperature changes without warping, cracking, or shattering — a container can go straight from the freezer to the oven without a second thought. It's the same material used in laboratory glassware for exactly this reason. Stainless steel
316L stainless steel — the grade used for superior corrosion resistance and long-term food safety — is one of the most durable, chemically stable materials available for food storage. Completely plastic-free in construction, oven and air fryer safe without the lid, and dishwasher safe throughout. The rectangular stainless steel containers we carry come with a BPA-free tempered glass lid and silicone gasket for an airtight, spill-proof seal. Three sizes from 27 oz to 61 oz cover the full range of storage needs, and five lid color options make fridge organization straightforward.
For replacing plastic wrap
Beeswax wraps are a natural and reusable alternative to plastic wrap. They're made from cotton infused with beeswax, tree resin, and oil — materials that are food-safe, biodegradable, and effective at keeping food fresh. They're not designed for raw meat, but for the vast majority of food storage tasks, they work well and eliminate the need for disposable plastic wrap entirely.
A note on the swap
Switching away from plastic food storage doesn't have to happen all at once. The most practical approach is to replace containers as they wear out rather than discarding everything immediately. Plastic that is scratched, cloudy, or warped is more likely to leach — prioritizing those pieces first is a reasonable place to start.
The goal isn't a perfectly plastic-free kitchen overnight. It's making more informed choices about what your food comes into contact with, and replacing the highest-risk items with materials you can trust.
