Money Tree 'Guiana Chestnut' | Pachira aquatica
Live Indoor Plant | Native to Central + South America | Braided Trunk | Pet-Safe

The braid is not natural. That's the more interesting story.

In the wild, Pachira aquatica grows as a single massive tree — up to 60 feet tall in the swampy wetlands of Central and South America, with smooth bark and large palmate leaves. There is no braiding in nature. The braided form was popularized in the 1980s by a Taiwanese truck driver who cultivated several young saplings together in a single pot, weaving their flexible green trunks while they were still pliable. The technique became a commercial phenomenon — first in Japan, then across East Asia, eventually worldwide. What sits in your home is five individual trees growing from the same pot, their trunks permanently interlocked as they grow.

The cultural symbolism arrived alongside the braiding. The five leaves typically found on each stalk are said to represent the five elements of feng shui — water, earth, fire, wind, and metal — and the braid itself is believed to trap good fortune within its folds. Whether or not you approach the plant through that lens, the visual logic holds: the interlocked trunks create something structurally unusual and genuinely beautiful, with the canopy of glossy palmately-lobed leaves fanning out from the braided column in a way that reads as architectural rather than merely decorative. Finding a stalk with seven leaves is considered rare and a sign of particular good fortune — worth noting when you get to know your plant.

The Money Tree is non-toxic to cats, dogs, and humans — one of the more unconditional choices for any household.

Product details:

  • Grows 3–8 feet tall indoors; slow to moderate grower
  • Bright indirect light preferred; tolerates moderate direct light but bright indirect is best for sustained health
  • Water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry; do not overwater — the braided trunks are vulnerable to rot at the base
  • Average to moderate humidity; misting appreciated but not required
  • 65–80°F | keep from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F
  • Non-toxic to cats, dogs, and humans

Care notes: Well-draining potting mix; do not allow to sit in water. Water thoroughly then allow to partially dry before watering again — overwatering is the primary risk, particularly at the base of the braid where moisture accumulates. Rotate regularly for even canopy growth. Fertilize monthly at half strength during spring and summer. If leaves yellow and drop, reduce watering and check drainage. Brown leaf tips often indicate low humidity or fluoride in tap water — use filtered water when possible.

Why we love it:

  • The braid is human-made, not natural — five individual trees grown together, permanently interlocked at the trunk
  • A plant with a specific, documented origin story rather than centuries of tradition
  • The five-leaf symbolism is genuine to feng shui practice; a seven-leaf stalk on your plant is worth noticing
  • Glossy, palmate leaves on an architectural braided trunk — one of the most visually distinctive forms in the collection
  • Non-toxic to cats, dogs, and humans — unconditional for any household

Native Manor Note: The Money Tree transpires consistently through its broad, palmate leaf canopy, contributing to room humidity throughout the day — particularly useful in heated or air-conditioned interiors where air dries quickly. It also appears in air quality research for VOC absorption, complementing the broader Air + Scent collection in its passive contribution to the indoor environment. The more immediate contribution is the one the plant makes to the room it occupies: a braided trunk, a full canopy, and a history worth knowing. Whether you're placing it in the southeast corner for feng shui or simply giving it a window with good light, the Money Tree is a plant that carries its story with it wherever it goes.
