Pothos 'Silver Splash' | Scindapsus pictus 'Exotica'
Live Indoor Plant | Native to Southeast Asia | Satin Pothos | Trailing Vine

Not technically a pothos. Better than most of them.

Scindapsus pictus 'Exotica' is sold as a satin pothos and shares the same trailing, vining habit as Epipremnum aureum — but it's a different genus entirely, with a leaf texture and variegation pattern that sets it apart from anything in the true pothos family. The large, heart-shaped leaves are a deep matte green overlaid with broad, irregular silver-grey splashes that cover much of the leaf surface. The texture is satin-like rather than glossy — the surface catches light softly, without the shine of a Monstera or Pothos Golden. In morning light the silver reads almost luminous. In lower light it deepens to a quieter, more subtle contrast.

The 'Exotica' variety has larger silver patches than the more common 'Argyraeus' — the splashes are bolder and more irregular, covering more of the leaf surface and creating a more dramatic contrast. Each leaf is different. The plant trails generously from shelves and hanging baskets, and climbs willingly up a moss pole, producing larger leaves as it ascends.

Native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, it grows as an epiphyte — climbing tree trunks and absorbing moisture from the humid air around it. Indoors, this means it appreciates higher humidity and a well-aerated substrate, but it's more forgiving than its care requirements suggest. It tolerates lower light better than most variegated plants, though the silver contrast is most vivid in bright indirect light.

A note on toxicity: Scindapsus pictus is toxic to cats, dogs, and humans if ingested. Keep out of reach of pets and children.

Product details:

  • Trailing or climbing vine; leaves grow larger with support
  • Medium to bright indirect light; tolerates lower light but silver variegation fades
  • Allow top inch of soil to dry between waterings
  • Appreciates moderate to high humidity; misting helps
  • 65–85°F | keep from cold drafts
  • Toxic to cats, dogs, and humans if ingested

Care notes: Well-draining potting mix with added perlite. Water when the top inch of soil is dry. Fertilize monthly at half strength during spring and summer. Provide a moss pole or support for larger leaf development. Propagate by stem cutting in water or moist soil.

Why we love it:

  • Large, irregular silver splashes on matte deep green — bolder and more dramatic than the common 'Argyraeus' variety
  • Satin leaf texture catches light differently than any glossy-leafed plant in the collection
  • Tolerates lower light better than most variegated plants while maintaining its silver contrast
  • Trails or climbs; produces larger, more dramatically marked leaves with vertical support
  • Each leaf is unique — no two silver splash patterns are identical

Native Manor Note: The Silver Splash contributes to the rooms it lives in through consistent transpiration and the quiet, continuous work of photosynthesis. Its specific contribution to the collection is visual: a matte, silver-splashed leaf that reads differently in different light conditions, that trails generously from a shelf or climbs a pole with equal grace, and that rewards the kind of attention that notices how a plant looks at different times of day. It is one of the more underrated plants in the collection — less famous than the Monstera, less common than the Golden Pothos, and more interesting than either in the right light.
