Snake Plant 'Starlight' | Dracaena trifasciata 'Starlight'
Live Indoor Plant | Native to West Africa | CAM Photosynthesis | Low Maintenance

The most architectural plant in the collection — and the one that works hardest while you sleep.

The 'Starlight' is a white-variegated cultivar of Dracaena trifasciata — the same species as the 'Black Gold', but with a dramatically different coloring. Upright, sword-like leaves carry broad white or cream variegation that covers much of the leaf surface, with green banding visible through the pale sections. The effect is bright and graphic: a plant that reads as almost white in good light, with the green patterning adding depth rather than dominating. It's one of the most visually striking Snake Plant varieties available, and one of the most unusual in the collection.

Like all Dracaena trifasciata, the Starlight uses Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) — opening its stomata at night to absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, then closing them during the day to conserve water. The practical result is a plant that is actively improving the air in your bedroom while you sleep, which is the opposite of what most plants do. It appeared in NASA's original clean air study as a top performer for formaldehyde, benzene, xylene, and trichloroethylene removal.

It is one of the most drought-tolerant plants in the collection. Overwatering is the only significant risk.

A note on toxicity: Toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Keep out of reach of pets.

Product details:

  • Upright, sword-like leaves; grows 2–3 feet tall indoors
  • Low to bright indirect light; tolerates very low light; avoid direct sun which scorches the pale variegation
  • Water every 2–6 weeks; allow soil to dry completely between waterings
  • Average indoor humidity; no misting required
  • 60–80°F | keep from temperatures below 50°F
  • Toxic to cats and dogs if ingested

Care notes: Well-draining potting mix or cactus mix. Water thoroughly, then allow to dry completely before watering again — in winter, once a month or less is often sufficient. Do not allow to sit in water. Fertilize sparingly — once or twice during spring and summer at half strength. Propagate by rhizome division to maintain the 'Starlight' variegation — leaf cuttings will produce plain green offspring.

Why we love it:

  • Broad white-cream variegation on upright sword leaves — one of the brightest and most graphic plants in the collection
  • CAM photosynthesis — opens stomata at night, releasing oxygen while you sleep
  • Among the top performers in NASA's clean air study for formaldehyde, benzene, and xylene removal
  • Genuinely drought-tolerant — one of the most forgiving plants for irregular watering
  • Upright form adds vertical structure without requiring floor space

Native Manor Note: The Starlight earns its place in the Air + Scent collection through the same combination as the Black Gold: documented air quality performance and the specific biology of CAM photosynthesis. The visual difference is significant — where the Black Gold reads as dark and architectural, the Starlight reads as bright and graphic, almost luminous in good light. Both are doing the same work. The Starlight does it in a way that brightens the room it occupies, which is its own contribution to the quality of the space.
