Spider Plant 'Reverse' | Chlorophytum comosum 'Variegatum'
Live Indoor Plant | Native to Southern Africa | Reverse Variegated | Pet-Safe

The same plant, inverted — and the difference is more interesting than it sounds.

The 'Reverse' Spider Plant is a variegated cultivar of Chlorophytum comosum with the coloring flipped from the standard variety: where the classic Spider Plant has a cream or white central stripe on green, the 'Reverse' has green in the center and cream or white margins running along the outer edges of each leaf. The effect is a brighter, more luminous plant — the white margins catch light from the outside of the leaf rather than the center, giving the plant a different visual quality in the same light conditions.

The leaves are slightly broader than the standard variety, and the white margins are consistent and clean — not mottled or irregular, but a defined edge that runs the full length of each leaf. In a hanging basket, the trailing stolons and spiderettes carry the same reverse variegation, making the whole plant read as consistently bright from any angle.

Like all Spider Plants, the 'Reverse' was included in NASA's original clean air study and subsequent independent research for formaldehyde and xylene removal. It produces spiderettes continuously through the growing season, making it one of the most freely propagating plants in the collection. It is non-toxic to cats, dogs, and humans — one of the most unconditional choices available.

Product details:

  • Arching, spreading form; produces trailing stolons with spiderettes
  • Medium to bright indirect light; tolerates lower light; white margins may fade in very low light
  • Allow top inch of soil to dry between waterings; sensitive to fluoride — use filtered water when possible
  • Average indoor humidity; appreciates occasional misting
  • 60–80°F | keep from cold drafts
  • Non-toxic to cats, dogs, and humans

Care notes: Well-draining potting mix. Water when the top inch of soil is dry. Brown leaf tips are common and usually indicate fluoride in tap water or low humidity — use filtered water and trim tips with clean scissors if desired. Fertilize monthly at half strength during spring and summer. Propagate spiderettes by placing in water until roots develop, then pot in soil.

Why we love it:

  • Inverted variegation — white margins on green center rather than green margins on white center — a genuinely different visual quality in the same light
  • Brighter and more luminous than the standard Spider Plant in most light conditions
  • Produces spiderettes continuously — one plant becomes many, freely and quickly
  • Same air quality performance as all Spider Plant varieties for formaldehyde and xylene removal
  • Non-toxic to cats, dogs, and humans — unconditional for any household

Native Manor Note: The 'Reverse' contributes to the rooms it lives in through the same documented air quality performance as the other Spider Plant varieties — formaldehyde and xylene absorbed through leaf stomata and broken down at the root zone, continuously, as long as the plant is healthy and adequately lit. Its specific contribution to the collection is the visual one: a plant that reads as brighter and more luminous than the standard variety in the same conditions, and that suits spaces where the classic Spider Plant might feel too familiar. The inverted variegation is a small difference that makes a noticeable one.
