Stromanthe 'Triostar' | Stromanthe sanguinea 'Triostar'
Live Indoor Plant | Native to Brazil | Prayer Plant Family | Pet-Safe

Three colors on top, one underneath — and the plant uses all four to manage its relationship with light.

The Triostar's coloring is not quite what it appears. The undersides of the leaves are a rich wine-red, and that color shows through the cream and white variegation on the top surface when backlit — which is where the pink tones come from. In direct light the leaves read as green, cream, and pink. Against a window with the light behind them, the wine-red burns through the pale sections in a way that looks entirely different. The plant is showing you four colors simultaneously, two of them visible only in certain light.

When the light intensity becomes too strong, the Triostar turns its leaves to present the red underside outward — a protective mechanism against overexposure, not a preference for shade. It's one of the more active responses to light in the collection: the plant is physically repositioning itself in real time. Like all Marantaceae, it also performs nyctinasty — folding leaves upward each evening and opening them at dawn — which makes the deep wine undersides visible from above every night.

The pink Triostar doesn't exist in the wild. It's a cultivar of a wild Brazilian species that has plain green leaves with purple backs — selected and developed for the tricolor variegation that makes it one of the most visually specific plants available indoors. No two leaves are identical.

It is non-toxic to cats, dogs, and humans — a safe choice for any household.

Product details:

  • Grows to 2–3 feet tall and wide; upright clumping form
  • Bright indirect light; never direct sun, which causes scorching and bleaching; the more indirect light, the more variegation visible on the leaves
  • Water when top inch of soil is dry; sensitive to fluoride — use filtered or overnight-rested tap water
  • High humidity essential (60%+); mist regularly or use a humidifier
  • 65–80°F | keep from cold drafts and temperature fluctuations
  • Non-toxic to cats, dogs, and humans

Care notes: Well-draining potting mix with added perlite. Water with filtered or room-temperature water — tap water chemicals cause brown tips over time. Fertilize monthly at half strength during spring and summer. Propagate by rhizome division in spring — stem cuttings will not maintain variegation. Wipe leaves occasionally with a damp cloth.

Why we love it:

  • Four visible colors depending on light angle and time of day — no other plant in the collection reads so differently from one moment to the next
  • Active light management — the plant physically repositions leaves to protect against overexposure
  • Non-toxic to cats, dogs, and humans — unconditional for any household
  • No two leaves identical — each one its own pattern
  • More forgiving than most Calatheas despite similar care requirements

Native Manor Note: The Triostar transpires consistently through its broad, upright leaves, adding humidity to the air around it throughout the day. As a rainforest understory plant, it's adapted to the kind of warm, filtered, moderately humid conditions that also happen to be comfortable for human respiratory health — and its active contribution to room humidity through transpiration supports that comfort, particularly in heated interiors where winter air loses moisture quickly. The research connecting indoor plants to reduced stress and improved mood is well-established, and a plant this visually specific — one that rewards attention with different views at different times — earns that contribution more than most.
